People often count the procedure days and forget the travel days. Then they use the weekend as a medical buffer and assume Monday will behave. A more realistic PTO plan separates treatment time, travel time, recovery time and contingency time.
Think in four buckets
- Travel: outbound and return travel days.
- Treatment: days with meaningful clinical appointments.
- Recovery: days when you may not want meetings, presentations or physical work.
- Contingency: at least some room if the clinic needs an adjustment or lab redo.
Remote work is not automatically recovery
A laptop can reduce PTO, but a long video call may be unpleasant after extensive dental work. Speech can also feel different with swelling or a new provisional. If your job is meeting-heavy, do not count every non-clinic hour as fully productive.
Two-trip implants need two PTO budgets
If the case has a surgical trip and a restorative trip, plan both before treatment begins. The second trip may be shorter, but it still includes flights, appointments and the risk of adjustment time.
Use weekends strategically, not desperately
Weekends can reduce work absence when the clinic schedule lines up, but do not compress a medically appropriate stay just to protect one workday. Make the treatment timeline first and fit work around it.
Turn the treatment plan into a real trip.
Send the procedure, city you are considering, and the dates you have in mind. We can help you think through the trip length, second-trip risk, lodging and logistics. For clinical decisions, your treating dentist remains the decision-maker.

Can I work the day after veneers?
Some people can, but comfort, speech and the appointment schedule vary. Ask the clinic what patients commonly experience and avoid committing to a critical presentation if you can.
How much contingency PTO should I hold?
Even one flexible day can help. Larger or lab-dependent cases benefit from more schedule slack.
Can I work from Colombia between appointments?
Often yes if your role permits, but build around treatment and recovery first. Verify internet quality and have a quiet workspace at your lodging.
