Planning the Second Implant Trip: The Trip People Forget to Budget

How to plan the restorative return visit for dental implants: timing confirmation, records, flights, lab days, final crown or bridge and adjustment buffer.

Updated September 13, 2026 · Independent trip-planning information · Not dental advice

Trip two is usually less dramatic than implant surgery, which is exactly why people under-plan it. The problem is that a final crown or bridge still has to be designed, made, fitted and adjusted. The second flight is not just a pickup appointment.

Do not book trip two by calendar alone

Your clinic should confirm that the implant is ready for the planned restorative phase. Healing intervals vary. The ADA notes that osseointegration can take months, and the treating clinician must decide when the implant is ready for the next step.

Clarify whether scans happen before or after arrival

If the clinic needs a new scan or impression before the lab can make the final restoration, the second trip needs fabrication time. Ask whether any records can be collected locally or whether the restorative work starts only after you arrive.

A simple second-trip calendar

  1. Arrival buffer.
  2. Clinical check and scan/impression.
  3. Lab/fabrication window.
  4. Try-in or delivery.
  5. Bite/fit adjustment day.
  6. Departure buffer.

Bring the first-trip records back with you

Keep the implant information, surgery date, images and any interim notes accessible. If another clinician handled care between trips, bring those records too.

Budget reminderThe treatment is not truly “$X abroad” until trip-two airfare, lodging and lost work time are included.

Your actual treatment price can change based on your examination, imaging, tooth prognosis, bone or grafting needs, implant/restorative system, materials, sedation, and treatment sequence. Frequently asked questions

How long after implant placement is trip two?

It varies. The ADA notes osseointegration may take months. Your implant team should confirm readiness based on the individual case.

Can my home dentist do trip two instead?

Sometimes, if deliberately coordinated and compatible with the implant system and treatment plan. Arrange that before surgery if it is your goal.

How many days should trip two be?

Ask how the final restoration is fabricated and whether a try-in is required. Lab workflow, number of units and adjustments determine the useful stay.
